About RPI Ambulance

Who We Are

RPI Ambulance is a New York State-certified, fully student-run, transporting ambulance agency that serves the RPI campus and surrounding communities. In a normal school year, we respond to between 200 and 300 calls for service and provide standby EMS coverage for about 30 special events.

All RPI students are eligible to join RPI Ambulance—no previous experience is necessary. We offer complete training from CPR certification all the way up to sponsorship for an EMT course.

Training

We take pride in knowing that when you call 911 and we show up, our crew will be able to handle the situation, no matter what. We demand mastery—not just proficiency—during all phases of medical and emergency operations.

Our crew chiefs and drivers undergo months of training,, immersing them in the classroom, with simulated patients, and on real calls. When a crew chief or driver is cleared, they’ll be able to treat and coordinate care for you, your family members, and your friends.

After an EMT becomes a crew chief, they have the option of pursuing training in event management, ultimately becoming an event EMS supervisor. An EES, under the National Incident Management System framework, is an incident commander and has ultimate control over all event operations.

Our History

RPI Ambulance was founded in 1977 and was the first EMS agency in Troy. Today, we serves the RPI campus and provide mutual aid coverage to other areas of Rensselaer County and, occasionally, Albany County.
